Hello, and welcome to Homebrew for October 8th, 2026.
The signal today is stale or out-of-order state causing wrong decisions, from upgrade checks to cask cleanup to trust.
First, believing the wrong cache. In PR 24193, a report shows the JSON A P I cache bumps the file's modification time on every check, then revalidates by time. If the first fetch hits a stale content delivery edge, that stale body gets a newer timestamp than the real object, the server answers not modified forever,…
Second, cask uninstall and upgrade ordering. PR 24194 would merge the uninstall and zap stanzas into a single ordered pass. Today zap runs after everything is removed, so a zap script pointing inside its own app, as with Mullvad VPN and Private Internet Access cited in the report, fails with script does not exist…
Finally, smaller efficiency and test fixes. PR 24190, merged, stops shelling out to grep for every file during keg relocation, reading in chunks in Ruby and exiting on the first match. PR 24192, also merged, fixes an exec test that reused its fixture database.
What's next: watch the three open proposals on zap ordering, E tag validation, and approval scope, all change upgrade and cleanup…
